Departments
The Medical School is composed of five Faculty departments and the Unit of Medical Education (AUME).
Cardiovascular Science
Comprises strong groups working in basic and clinical science. These are Cell Biology, Coronary Artery Disease, Haemostasis, Inflammatory Signalling, Medical Physics, Non-Mammalian Models, Platelet, Pulmonary Vascular, Vascular Biology.
Infection & Immunity
Includes basic science research groups together with clinical specialities including Respiratory Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Renal Medicine, Tumour Inflammation and Dermatology. The major strengths of the section currently are in the role of innate immunity in various diseases, and in host response to infection, particularly bacterial infections.
Human Metabolism
Brings together laboratories with international reputations for research in both basic and clinical sciences. These include the Academic Units of Bone Metabolism, Bone Biology, the Children's Bone Disease Group, Rheumatology and Molecular Medicine, Reproductive & Developmental Medicine and Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism.
Neuroscience
This Department is multifaceted, investigating neuroscience at every scale from pathological disease in humans, through studies of brain function in psychiatric disorders, to the biological development of neural tissue.
Oncology
This Department has developed rapidly since the early 1990s. Over the last ten years there has been a tremendous increase in the quality and quantity of both clinical and laboratory based research. High quality, senior appointments have been made to ensure the establishment and development of an internationally competitive cancer research programme.

Academic Unit of Medical Education
As an Academic Unit in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sheffield, Medical Education is a significant university-based concentration of medical education resources and one of the most important in the UK.
