North Campus
In its centenary year the University of Sheffield undertook a major expansion of its science and engineering facilities. It acquired a new site on which to locate its North Campus site, a UK hub for multidisciplinary science and engineering.
This campus includes three prestigious centres, the Kroto Research Institute, The Kroto Innovation Centre and the Nanoscience and Technology Centre. These centres comprise over 18,000 square metres in what is believed to be the UK's largest dedicated multidisciplinary research facility. The multidisciplinary research allows strong engagement with industry's pressing problems and opportunities: together with a purpose built commercial innovation centre on-site, the Kroto Innovation Centre, this multidisciplinary research makes North Campus a centre of gravity for industrial engagement.
This ambitious new initiative keeps Sheffield at the forefront of research in convergent technologies; two important threads running through the research themes are nanotechnology and the convergence of the physical and biological sciences.
