About the course

9 months part-time by distance learning

If you want to take the MSc Statistics or Statistics with Medical Applications but don't have the right qualifications, this nine-month course is perfect preparation. Completion of the certificate with a high-level pass in the examinations qualifies you to join either course.

The certificate gives you training in undergraduate-level mathematics and statistics. It's taught online, so you can study from home.

Entry requirements

An honours degree in any subject and A Level mathematics or equivalent

English language requirements

IELTS 6.5 (with no less than 5.5 in each part), or TOEFL 90–91 (iBT), or equivalent.

Three 20-credit modules in:

  • Mathematical Methods for Statistics
  • Probability and Probability Distributions
  • Basic Statistics

Teaching

You'll be taught via distance learning through the web.

Assessment

  • Exams
  • Assessed coursework

Exams take place in Sheffield at the end of the course.

Our MSc graduates have gone on to careers in finance, manufacturing companies, pharmaceutical companies, government agencies and research institutes with major organisations like First Direct, GlaxoSmithKline, Marks and Spencer, the Government Statistical Service and Medical Research Council units.

Our MSc courses will also prepare you for PhD-level research.

About us

Our teaching staff are engaged nationally and internationally, as officers or committee members of societies and organisations, and as speakers at conferences. They bring new and emerging ideas into the classroom so you can see how research is improving on existing approaches.

Our Statistical Services Unit provides services to industry, commerce and the public sector, including consultancy, training courses and computer software development. If you're taking a statistics course, you'll have the opportunity to observe the work of the unit, giving you valuable insight into the job of a statistical consultant. You may also have the chance to work on a project with an external organisation.

Our solar scientists were the first to record musical sounds created by vibrations in the sun's atmosphere.
