MA Chinese Studies

We offer flexible courses that focus on political economy, society and business in China, Japan and Korea. Your masters will prepare you for a career in the arts, academia or business, anywhere in the world.

About the course

1 year full-time

You can choose from social science modules and Chinese language options. This is a highly flexible course. It can be used to refine your existing skills or as an introduction to the subject.

Entry requirements

You'll need a good first degree in any subject. You don't need prior knowledge of an East Asian language. If you don't have a degree but you have experience of East Asia, we'll consider your application.

Native speakers of Chinese are welcome to apply to this degree, but you won't be able to take the optional language modules.

English language requirements for overseas students

Overall IELTS grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in Reading, 6.5 in Writing, 5.5 in Listening and 5.5 in Speaking, or equivalent.

Options

You can study a shorter programme on our courses for a Postgraduate Certificate (4 months, 60 credits) or Postgraduate Diploma (9 months, 120 credits). You'll need 180 credits to achieve a masters degree, getting 60 credits from your extended project.

Leaders in our field

This is one of Europe's leading centres for the study of China, Japan and Korea. You'll study within a dynamic research culture, supported by our links with partner universities in East Asia. Our academics use the theories, methods and findings from their own research to inform teaching.

Our four interdisciplinary research clusters inform what we teach, so your masters is up-to-date and relevant. The clusters are: Social Change and Transition in East Asia; Regionalisation and Globalisation; East Asian Identities and Cultures; Business, Political Economy and Development.

In collaboration with the University of Leeds, we established the White Rose East Asia Centre to produce world-class research and research training in Japanese and Chinese studies. The Sheffield Confucius Institute, supported by the Chinese government, offers further opportunities to explore Chinese culture and language.
