Other UK qualifications

If you are taking A Levels, you can find information about our requirements on our A Levels webpage.

We consider a range of qualifications at Level 3 or above (in the National Qualifications Framework) for entry to our undergraduate courses.

The table below lists some of the qualifications we consider. Precise entry requirements vary for each degree course and some courses do not accept all of the qualifications listed. Courses with subject pre-requisites also require specific grades or scores in individual subjects.

The information in the table should be read alongside our general admissions requirements. If you are taking a qualification which is not listed below, please contact the Admissions Service for further advice.

If you know which course(s) you would like to apply for, please also refer to course entry requirements in our Undergraduate Prospectus and at UCAS Course Search.

Information for applicants taking A Levels

Access to HE Courses/Diplomas

We require a QAA-recognised Access to HE Diploma (a minimum of 60 credits overall with at least 45 at Level 3) in a relevant subject area to the chosen course. Specific grades in particular units are required for certain courses.

Entry requirements are included in UCAS Entry Profiles.

Advanced Diploma

The majority of our courses accept one or more of the Level 3 Advanced Diplomas. Applicants are required to take Additional or Specialist Learning (ASL) components, normally in the form of a specific A Level subject. Acceptance of each Diploma subject varies by course.

Entry requirements are available in our online Undergraduate Prospectus and UCAS Entry Profiles. Information on the subjects accepted by each academic department is also provided on our Advanced Diploma webpages.

Advanced Extension Awards

Although we do not require Advanced Extension Awards (AEAs) for entry, we welcome applicants who have taken one or more AEAs as they can provide further evidence of achievement.

AQA Baccalaureate

Entry requirements for the AQA Bacc are based on the three A Levels taken within the overall qualification. Students taking the AQA Bacc should therefore refer to our standard A Level entry requirements for their chosen course(s).

BTEC National Diploma/Extended Diploma (Level 3)

The 18-unit BTEC National Diploma or QCF BTEC Extended Diploma is considered for entry provided it is in a relevant subject to the chosen course. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Diploma (eg DDD or DDM). Some courses specify required levels of achievement in particular units or may ask for additional qualifications to satisfy subject requirements.

Entry requirements are included in the Undergraduate Prospectus and UCAS Entry Profiles.

BTEC National Certificate/Award or Diploma/Subsidiary Diploma (Level 3)

We consider the 12-unit BTEC National Certificate or QCF Diploma where taken alongside one, and the 6-unit BTEC National Award or Subsidiary Diploma where taken alongside two, of our acceptable A Level subjects. We advise applicants to avoid combinations of similar subjects in their BTECs and A Levels.

BTEC and SQA Higher National Certificate/Diploma

We require BTEC and SQA Higher National Diplomas and Certificates to be offered in a subject relevant to the chosen course. If there is sufficient evidence of experience and preparation at the required level, applicants may be considered for entry to the second year of a degree course.

Cambridge Pre-U

We consider applicants offering Pre-U Principal Subjects, or a mix of Pre-U and A Level subjects, provided a minimum of three subjects overall is taken.

Entry requirements are included in the online Undergraduate Prospectus and UCAS Entry Profiles.

Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma

The 18-unit Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma is considered for entry provided it is in a relevant subject to the chosen course.* Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Diploma (eg DDD or DDM). Some courses specify required levels of achievement in particular units or may ask for additional qualifications to satisfy subject requirements

* Please contact our Applicant Information Desk for further advice and guidance.

Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma or Subsidiary Diploma or Technical Diploma

We consider the 12-unit Cambridge Technical Diploma where taken alongside one, and the 6-unit Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma where taken alongside two, of our acceptable A Level subjects. We advise applicants to avoid combinations of similar subjects in their Cambridge Technicals and A Levels.

Please contact our Applicant Information Desk for further advice and guidance.

Extended Project

We do not require the Extended Project for entry although we encourage students to complete an EP where possible, as we value the development of skills in independent study and research that it can offer.

Some academic departments may include the EP in an alternative offer where this is judged to be in a relevant subject area to the chosen course and is completed alongside three A-levels.

If you have any questions about the acceptance of the EP for your chosen course(s), please contact the relevant academic department.

International Baccalaureate Diploma

We require students to obtain the full award of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. Our entry requirements are based on the overall IB points score. Courses with subject pre-requisites also require scores in individual subjects at a particular level (eg Higher Level). Entry requirements are provided in the Undergraduate Prospectus and UCAS Entry Profiles.

Applicants offering IB Certificates combined with other qualifications (A Levels or USA APs), are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Irish Leaving Certificate

We normally require six Higher subjects.

Entry requirements are provided in the Undergraduate Prospectus and UCAS Entry Profiles.

NVQ Level 3

We consider applications from students offering NVQ Level 3 qualifications provided they are in a relevant subject area and are taken alongside two of our acceptable A Level subjects. We also advise students to avoid combinations of similar subjects in their A Levels and NVQs.

OCR National Extended Diploma (Level 3)

The 18-unit OCR National Extended Diploma is considered for entry provided it is in a relevant subject to your chosen course. Some courses specify required levels of achievement in particular units or may ask for additional qualifications to satisfy subject requirements.
