How do students pay for their tuition fees?

Students do not need to pay tuition fees up front. All UK/EU students will be eligible for a tuition fee loan from the government which will be paid directly to the University once a student has registered on their course.

Loans will be available for up to £9,000 a year, covering the full tuition fee for your course.

How will tuition fee loans be repaid?

For students starting in 2012-13, it is proposed by the government that students will start to repay their loan after they have graduated and are earning over £21,000 a year.

Once graduates earn over £21,000, they will pay nine per cent of income above £21,000. So if their salary is £25,000, they would pay nine per cent of £4,000 which is £30 a month. Repayments are normally taken automatically from salary with tax and National Insurance.

You can calculate typical weekly repayment amounts using the government's student finance website. The starting salaries are based on 2010 figures.

What financial help is available?

Financial assistance will be available from both the government and the University to help cover the costs of going to University. The University expects to be offering financial support to almost 40% of our home undergraduate students post 2012.

In total, our total spend on financial support to University of Sheffield students will increase by almost £2.5 million a year to just under £8 million a year.
