Research Groups

Research is a key activity in the School of Clinical Dentistry. It informs our teaching and opens up new horizons in our clinical work.

All members of staff, including NHS colleagues, are encouraged to participate in one or more of our research groups, which has the benefit that they are able to join experienced researchers and share in ongoing research programmes.

The current range of research encompasses both laboratory and clinical projects. At present the School of Clinical Dentistry is organised in to four research groups, representing areas of international research strength.

Ethics Review Procedure

All members of staff within the Dental School, and supervised students who are registered with the university and who plan to undertake research which involves human participants, their data or tissue should ensure that their proposed research is ethically approved via the appropriate ethics review procedure prior to commencing such research.

Projects that involve patients or staff of the Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust should obtain NHS ethical approval via a recognised Research Ethics Committee (REC).

There are two recognised RECs in Sheffield- North (based at the Northern General Hospital site) and South (based at the central site). Contact details for all RECs can be found on the COREC website

Staff and current students

Research projects that do not involve NHS patients but will involve people participating either directly (interviews, questionnaires) or indirectly (accessing data and/or tissue), you should apply to the School Ethics Committee. Details on this procedure and the forms for staff and PGR, PGT and UG students can be found in the downloads box on the right.
