Our relationship with Nigeria
The University of Sheffield has a long established relationship with Nigeria. The first known Nigerian graduate of Sheffield graduated from us in 1950 and there are now over 300 known graduates of the University of Sheffield living in Nigeria.
Some well-known alumni include:
- Dr Abolaji Ajenifuja, OFR, (1959), a consultant Physician and Paediatrician at the University of Ibadan
- Professor Lateef Salako CON, NNOM, (1969), an Emeritus Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Ibadan
- Professor Tolu Olukayode Odugbemi, (1978), Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos
- Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the first Prime Minister of independent Nigeria (Honorary Degree holder)
