Narmada Herath

Narmada graduated from The University of Sheffield in 2011 with a BEng in Computer Systems Engineering.

One of the reasons I chose to study here at the University of Sheffield was that it is a well reputed and top rated university for engineering in the UK. The fact that the department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering is rated with maximum scores for teaching and research quality further encouraged me to choose my course at the University of Sheffield.

There are many different types of coursework organised throughout my course such as group projects, presentations etc. Engaging in these various activities make the course very enjoyable. My course is well structured to give the students an opportunity to develop skills in all areas searched for by the employers in the industry. This increases our chances in gaining a career in the industry and prepares us for the future careers.

We are taught with different teaching methods such as lectures where we are given the knowledge through written and verbal media and laboratory work where we are given the facility to experiment things and learn by ourselves. The lecturers are very keen on teaching and also very helpful. There are many facilities and resources to assist us in learning which makes learning very interesting and fun.

With the superb teaching quality of the university, the knowledge we gain would be up to a very high standard, and due to the international reputation of the university we would have excellent career prospects. As the ACSE department has strong links with the industry we would also have opportunities to gain an insight into industrial projects while studying at the university.

At the university we also have the opportunity to join various types of activities ranging from sports, societies to community volunteering, which helps us to achieve valuable skills outside the degree course. So a graduate from the University of Sheffield will have their skills developed in every aspect, during their time at the university.

Everything about the life at the University of Sheffield has been an exciting experience for me. One of the best things about the life at the University of Sheffield is that it´s very hassle-free. Everything needed for day-to-day life is at an easy access. The lively but peaceful nature of the city with the pleasant and courteous manner of people makes it truly a pleasure to live in Sheffield.

After finishing my degree I´d like to adopt a career path in the computing or electronic industries as a qualified computer engineer. I have no doubt that my course at the University of Sheffield will assist me in gaining required knowledge and preparing myself to work in these industries.
