Nikita
Nikita graduated from The University of Sheffield in 2007 with an LLM Commercial Law
When I chose The University of Sheffield, I was on my foundation year, prior to university studies. I had read quite a lot of study material and law books for my classes which were written by the University of Sheffield academics. The fact that I could be taught by the strongest and well respected academics had quite an impression on me. Besides that, the Law School of Sheffield University is ranked highly and has a good reputation.
Prior to my university course I came to Sheffield for a visit, to have a look around, and even those few days that I spent here showed to me that the local people a very friendly and helpful not only to students but also to foreigners.
I studied for the LLM in Commercial Law. Before that I did undergraduate degree in International, European and Comparative Law at the University of Sheffield too. I made my decision very easily when thought of staying here for four consecutive years because of the variety of subjects and student-friendly way of teaching. There are a lot of different law firms coming to our university each year to recruit students, so I was pretty confident that having two degrees from the University of Sheffield would be a benefit for me when future employers saw it on my CV.
Sheffield itself is a medium-size city with a cosy city-centre. They say it is situated on the seven hills, just like Rome or Moscow. Sheffield might be smaller in size, but surely South Yorkshire´s famous Meadowhall shopping centre matches customer´s choice. One might think that since Sheffield is former industrial centre it is dull, but completely contrary to that it can surprise anybody with the amount of greenery all around the place.
In the first couple of years I could afford my self time wise to go out 3-5 times a week. Besides intensive night life I also enjoyed working out in the gym and playing football (both of which are provided by the university).
Maybe the only thing that made me nervous before I came to study at the University Of Sheffield was uncertainty of the fact whether I was doing the right thing. I looked at my friends who were back in Russia and I knew that had nothing to worry about since they went to university in their home town and their parents could take of them.
When I came to Sheffield it took me a few weeks to make new buddies over here, who became my new friends over time. I realised that I was not the only one in such situation (i.e. being away from home), and there were always people who were willing to help you. I valued the fact that I was able to study at the University of Sheffield where I made friends from different corners of the world and I gained loads of life experience.
My advice for prospective students is to enjoy their time at the University Of Sheffield, because people say that the university years are the best ones in a person´s life. And trust me, the local stuff does everything to help students and make our life easier!
