The University of Sheffield
Prospective International Students - Middle East

Diana Al Jahromi

Diana graduated from The University of Sheffield in 2010 with a PhD Applied Linguistics

Diana ProfileEver since I have become acquainted with the educational system back in Grade 1 or even earlier, I have had the desire to excel no matter what. Hence, I was always on top of the class at school, I graduated from high school with the highest results among all Bahraini students, I graduated from my bachelor degree in English language and literature with distinction and I finished my MA in Applied Linguistics with honorary distinction, for which I was granted awards by the King of Bahrain, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Education on separate occasions. And now, here I am in Sheffield pursuing my PhD with no less excellence - I hope - and dedication.

It is nothing to brag about but it is just a message for the young undergraduates to pursue knowledge and to search for a road not taken so that they can excel and shine.

Living in Sheffield has been an astounding experience as it is practically the first time I have lived on my own and taken full responsibility of running my everyday life. As I am sure it is the case with most international students, I have to admit that the first couple of months were very difficult as I hardly knew anybody. I used to feel as if I was starring a silent movie and I used to call myself Charlie Chaplin because everything I did was in silence: watching TV, shopping, hanging out, sightseeing … you name it. I soon started making new friends and the situation has utterly changed and I really feel attached to the local community here and to that of the international students especially those coming from the Middle East and sharing more or less the same concerns. Sheffield is a very nice and cosy city and once you have the right company, it just becomes perfect.

I have saved the best to the last. I have two little angels, Ali and Omran, and a very devoted husband, Mustafa, without whom I would not have made it. They are my constant source of delight and bliss and the drive that keeps pushing me forward everyday.
