Elmira graduated from The University of Sheffield in 2008 with an MEng Medical Systems Engineering

Elmira ProfileI am Elmira Karami from Iran. I studied a 3 year Automatic Control and Systems Engineering (BEng/ ACSE) undergraduate degree in Automatic Control and Systems Engineering department (ACSE).

I chose my course at the University of Sheffield because it had the highest ratings for teaching (24 out of 24) and research (grade 5*) in UK. Automatic Control and Systems Engineering provides updated modules and industry focussed projects in its Rolls-Royce centre. The link between University of Sheffield and Rolls-Royce gave me a great opportunity to have an Internship with Rolls-Royce in the summer of 2007. I worked in the Control Department of Rolls-Royce in which our team was working on the Trent 1000 Jet Engine to be implemented on the Boeing 787.

I chose Sheffield because it is safe and one of the cheapest cities in England and it is a convenient and peaceful place for student life, especially for international students who have not experienced British culture. I had a very interesting social life in Sheffield, full of new experiences which I would never have had in my home country.

Meeting new people from different countries with different cultures and having lots of international friends and chilling out with them was one of the most exciting experiences. Sheffield has an amazing countryside with the Peak District which is a great place for walking, climbing, kiting and of course having a relaxing picnic with friends.

I had lots of choices in my spare time inside and outside of the University such as playing tennis, roller skating and ice skating. Also university programs organise different amazing day trips to other cities almost every weekend all over England. I also attended different dance classes such as ballet, salsa and belly dancing in my spare time.

In my final year I completed a project in System Modelling for Steel Industry and wroteup my dissertation which took most of my time and I did not have that much free time to do extra activities but that is how it should be in the final year!
