Entry requirements for students from Canada
We have been welcoming students from Canada for many years and our staff are very familiar with the Canadian education system and qualifications.
High entrance requirements for our degree programmes at Sheffield reflect the quality of the University.
The information below is for guidance only.
For Entry to the University of Sheffield Science and Engineering Foundation Programme
Holders of an accredited High School Diploma listed below with high overall percentages and high percentages in Maths and Physics will be considered for direct admission to the Science and Engineering Foundation programme:
- Alberta General High School Diploma
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma
- British Columbia – Secondary School Diploma
- Québec Diplome d’Etudes Secondaires
Applicants also taking US university or college entrance tests must achieve high SAT I scores (minimum Verbal 580 and Math 520) or a high composite score in the ACT assessment.
Applicants taking the new SAT I writing test must achieve a high score.
All applications for the Science and Engineering Foundation Programme should be made through UCAS
For Entry to Undergraduate Programmes e.g. BSc, BA, BEng/ MEng
A variety of qualifications can be considered for direct admission to undergraduate bachelor degree programmes. All applications for undergraduate programmes should be made through UCAS
A Level
Applicants with a minimum of 3 A levels will be considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes.
International Baccalaureate
International Baccalaureate diploma holders will be considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes
Canadian High School Diploma
Holders of an accredited High School Diploma listed below with high overall percentages and high percentages in relevant individual subject areas will be considered for direct admission to the first year of undergraduate programmes:
- Alberta General High School Diploma
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma
- British Columbia – Secondary School Diploma
- Québec Diplome d’Etudes Collegiales

Other Qualifications
Applicants with one or more of the qualifications listed below will be considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes.
Applicants wishing to transfer from a regular undergraduate four year bachelors degree program in Canada will be considered for entry to the first or second year of undergraduate programmes. Applicants will be required to have a high overall current GPA and high grades in relevant individual subject areas.
For Entry to Postgraduate Taught Programmes e.g. MA, MSc
Holders of a good four year bachelor degree with high grades in relevant individual subjects from an accredited Canadian university or college will be considered for direct admission to postgraduate diploma or masters programmes.
For Entry to MBA
Holders of a good four year bachelor degree from an accredited Canadian university or college and at least 3 years´ post-graduation work experience will be considered for direct admission to the MBA. Applicants must be at least 25 years old by the time the programme starts.
Applicants with a lower GPA and considerable work experience may be considered
For Entry to Postgraduate Research Programmes e.g. MPhil, PhD, PhD with Integrated Masters
Holders of a good four year bachelor degree and a good masters degree with from an accredited Canadian university or college will be considered for direct admission to postgraduate research programmes.
