Academic Profile

I joined Sheffield Law School as the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) – Lecturer in 2013.

I was educated at Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Humboldt-University Berlin, the University of Limerick (Erasmus/Socrates) and I graduated from European University Viadrina in Frankfurt/Oder.

Prior to joining Sheffield, I taught European and International Law at Hanse Law School of Carl-von-Ossietzky-University Oldenburg and at Bremen University. I have also been a research assistant at Rostock University and research assistant and coordinator at the UNESCO Chair in International Relations at Technical University Dresden. My PhD dealt with non-profit governance in German charitable foundations (“Stiftungen”) and my post-doc research has focused on a comparative constitutional view on culture, participation rights and civil society.

I am a qualified German lawyer, hold the First and Second State Exam and practise as a solicitor. During my legal traineeship, I inter alia worked at Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft e.V. in Essen and in the EU, competition and regulatory department of the law firm Maclay Murray & Spens LLP in Edinburgh and Glasgow. In my practice as a lawyer, I focus on “Stiftungsberatung”, German non-profit law, compliance aspects and the European dimension of non-profit governance.

Qualifications

Solicitor (Rechtsanwältin), admission to all German Courts  (apart from Bundesgerichtshof)
Qualified German lawyer (assessor juris), Second State Exam in law, Federal State of Lower Saxony
PhD, University of Rostock
First State Exam in law, Federal State of Brandenburg
Dipl. jur., European University Viadrina Frankfurt/Oder

Teaching and Learning

My teaching at Sheffield focuses on German Law which I teach in German and English.

Especially when teaching languages and legal terminology in a foreign language, I believe in team teaching and a suggestopedic approach that combines an enjoyable atmosphere with tricky legal concepts from foreign jurisdictions. I also aim to prepare students on the Law (with German Law) degree for their stay abroad.

In my introduction to German Law class, for students who are interested in the subject but do not speak German, my approach is to explain the concepts and principles of German Law in an accessible way, but one which does not lose the richness of the source material or the legal context.

Students are very welcome to see me for any information about studying in Germany, DAAD summer courses, funding and research periods in Germany.

The modules I teach are:

Undergraduate
Deutsche Rechtsterminologie / German Legal Language
Introduction to German Law
German Law and Legal System
Principles of Comparative Law
