Valeria Insarauto is a Lecturer in Work and Employment in the Sheffield University Management School.
After obtaining her PhD from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, she was a Teaching and Research Fellow at Centre for Labour Economics and Industrial Sociology of Aix-Marseille University. She was then a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Madrid School of Advanced Hispanic and Iberian Studies, and a Senior Researcher and a Lecturer at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lausanne.
Valeria is a sociologist who specialises in labour market gender inequalities. Her research focuses on atypical employment and socio-economic vulnerability, the work-family interface, and discrimination and sexual harassment across occupations and workplaces, from a quantitative and international comparative perspective. Recent publications include articles in Work, Employment and Society, and Journal of Professions and Organization.

Valeria is a sociologist of work and employment specialising in labour market gender inequalities. Her research interests and activities focus on three main themes: a) atypical employment and gendered patterns of socio-economic vulnerability among marginal workers; b) the intertwining of discriminations and sexual harassment across occupational groups and workplace contexts; c) the work-family interface, including the ways it shapes gender roles and attitudes via patterns of occupational sex segregation.
To study these themes, she draws on a strongly interdisciplinary perspective, where she integrates contributions from the sociology of work, employment, and occupations, organizational studies, and research in social stratification, with those from gender and feminist scholarship. Quantitative methods and international comparison lie at the heart of Valeria’s research approach, that she applies to investigate how the interplay between social institutions and gender norms shapes the structures and patterns of work, employment and social reproduction across national contexts, and the ways this (re)produces or challenges gender inequalities.

Valeria has extensive undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience from multiple universities, in different countries, on a variety of subjects. Among others, she has been teaching courses in the domains of sociology of work and employment, social inequalities, and social sciences research methods.
She believes that teaching is much more than sharing knowledge, and that effective teaching should aim to increase students’ motivation, reinforce their autonomy, develop their problem-solving skills, and prompt their cooperation and communication abilities. Her teaching approach is research-led and relies on a mix of self-direct and project-based learning, to give students the opportunity to acquire knowledge through experience by putting theoretical concepts into practice, and to foster interactive moments in the classroom.
Thanks to her experience with multidisciplinary, international, and multilingual groups of students, she is also very attentive to maintain openness and flexibility in her teaching activities, to make sure that every student feels engaged with and included in the learning process all along.
