Executives volunteer to build Iron Age roundhouse

The Senior Management teams from the University of Sheffield and its Students´ Union took time out the office last week (25 June 2010) to lend a hand at Heeley City Farm.

Members of the University´s Executive Board along with the new Union Officers, visited the farm to help construct the final stages of the Iron Age roundhouse community classroom.

The volunteers spent the day thatching the roof of the roundhouse in water reed and constructing the outer walls using cob and daub construction methods. The completion of the roundhouse will provide a unique community classroom at the Farm and bring heritage to life for the local community. The work completed last week has taken the project a long way towards the launch of a programme of master-crafts classes in Autumn.

The event was organised by SheffieldVolunteering, based in the Union of Students, as part of their Summer Volidays extravaganza which took place last week (23-25 June 2010).

The week-long programme of events saw over 120 members of staff take part in a variety of activities across Sheffield. The event is designed to encourage more people to take up volunteering opportunities and enable staff to give something back to their local community.

Stella McHugh, Manager of SheffieldVolunteering, said: "Summer Volidays is a fantastic event. It´s a great way for staff to celebrate the end of the academic year and enjoy giving something back to the community they work in. We´ve got some great feedback from those who took part and those who have benefitted from the activities. Plus fantastic weather was a real bonus!"

Professor Tony Ryan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Science at the University of Sheffield, said: "We all had a great day volunteering at Heeley City Farm and we were delighted that we could contribute to building the community classroom. The Summer Volidays initiative is a fantastic opportunity for staff at the University to make a difference in the local community and contribute to the vibrancy of the city."
