Psychology groups celebrates 25th anniversary in the city
A national organisation for psychology postgraduates in the UK is set to celebrate its 25th annual conference in Sheffield, the city where the group was founded.
The Psychology Postgraduate Affairs Group (PsyPAG) will hold the conference at Sheffield Hallam University from Wednesday 21 to Friday 23 July 2010 to celebrate its success over the last quarter of a century. The event will be sponsored by the University of Sheffield´s Faculty of Science, Sheffield Hallam's Department of Psychology, Sociology and Politics and the North East branch of the British Psychological Society.
PsyPAG is run on a voluntary basis by postgraduates and is funded by the research board of the British Psychological Society. It aims to provide support for postgraduate students in the UK and act as a vehicle for communication between psychology students.
At the conference, postgraduate psychologists from institutions across the UK will be able to present first class research to their peers and esteemed psychology colleagues. The event offers members the opportunity to connect with others working in the field, swap findings and ideas, and to meet likeminded students. As well as traditional poster and oral presentations, the conference will feature workshops and other practical sessions to enhance learning and teaching skills.
Professor Graham Turpin, Head of the Department of Psychology at the University of Sheffield, said: "Given that the Department of Psychology at the University of Sheffield is one of the UK´s leading Psychology departments for psychological research and we have one of the largest groups of postgraduate students, it was only natural that we, together with Sheffield Hallam, should be hosting this event. This is especially the case since the group held its first conference back in Sheffield twenty five years ago.
"PsyPag´s activities through the British Psychological Society have helped postgraduate research to flourish throughout the UK. Indeed, the UK is second only to the US in the quality of psychological research published in the world´s leading economies."
Susan Jamison-Powell, associate lecturer in psychology at Sheffield Hallam University and a Committee Member of PsyPag, said: "This conference is a great opportunity for postgraduate psychology students to network with other psychologists and to attend some interesting workshops. The event also celebrates 25 years since the group was established in Sheffield to represent psychology postgraduates nationally."
