Senior University staff member appointed AMOSSHE Chair
A senior member of staff at the University of Sheffield, who has showed significant commitment and expertise in student services both at the University and beyond, has been elected Chair of AMOSSHE, the UK Student Services Organisation.
Dr Andrew West, Director of Student Services at the University of Sheffield, has already played an active role in AUA governance and agreed to chair the peer support group for AMOSSHE´s national Value and Impact project. He will now take up his post of Chair of AMOSSHE from 1 September 2010 for two years, where he will inform and support the leaders of student services, and represent, advocate for, and promote the student experience.
In his role at the University, Dr West directs one of the largest HE student services departments in England, and in 2010 the University of Sheffield was recognised for its `Outstanding Student Services Team´ in the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards.
Dr West has a comprehensive understanding of the different services that support students and the management needs within those services. He has served on the Executive Group of AMOSSHE for two years, is a member of the Board of Trustees of the AUA, and a member of the ARC professional development committee. Over the last two years Dr West chaired the steering group which led to the development of the AUA CPD framework.
Dr Andrew West, Director of Student Services at the University of Sheffield and incoming Chair of AMOSSHE, said: "I am delighted to be taking on the role of Chair at a very exciting time for the organisation, as we embark on our national project focussed on the value and impact of student support services in the HE sector.
"The project has attracted considerable support and interest in the sector and I feel sure it will provide valuable tools for our members and help us improve services to students."
Simon Wright, the outgoing Chair of AMOSSHE and Head of Student Services at the University of Exeter, said: "Student services make a significant contribution to the student experience. To fully appreciate this, we must understand the value and impact of our members´ work. Andrew´s close involvement with the Value and Impact project make him an excellent choice for Chair of AMOSSHE, the Student Services Organisation. He embodies the values of AMOSSHE, and I am confident that he will lead the organisation from strength to strength."
