Students head to festival to bring science to the public

Student scientists from the University of Sheffield will head to the Green Man Festival in Wales next week (19-23 August 2010) equipped with a number of creative science experiments for festival-goers to enjoy.

The students, who are part of the Science Brainwaves group at the University, have created a series of experiments centered on the theme of food. Each demonstration uses things commonly found in a kitchen to explore the fascinating world of science, from lighting an L.E.D. with a lemon to extracting DNA from strawberries using nothing but washing-up liquid, salt and alcohol.

The team will have a stall in an area of the festival called Einstein´s Garden, a family-friendly area devoted to art and science. In keeping with the theme they have decided to name the stall Einstein´s Kitchen. Revellers at the Festival will be able to get hands on with the intriguing experiments, whilst also learning the fundamental principles of biology, chemistry and physics.

Martin Turner, a PhD student from the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, and member of the group, said: "We are really excited about the Festival and think it will be another great opportunity to showcase some interesting science experiments to the public. We´ve even built our own little kitchen in a gazebo to take with us. I´ve been to a lot of music festivals but I´ve never seen anything like what we´ve got planned! We hope the experiments will help us communicate the interesting aspects of science so that it can be understood by all."

Notes for Editors: The festival is now sold out. For further information visit the below link.

The stalls will be in Einstein's Garden from 10am to 8pm every day.

The Science Brainwaves organise similar events around the country to encourage members of the public to engage with science.
