University of Sheffield funding

The University of Sheffield invests heavily in the development of our postgraduate community. University-funded schemes are listed below. Please note that individual departments may have different deadlines for PhD applications and you are advised to check the application process for your intended department as soon as possible.

Applications for most funding schemes open in October for the following academic year (i.e. October 2013 for 2014-15 entry), and close around February (2014 for 2014-15 entry).

UK Research Councils

The UK Research Councils are a major source of financial support for research postgraduates. EU applicants who have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years immediately preceding the start of their course are eligible for awards that cover tuition fees and provide a maintenance allowance. EU applicants do not meet this residency criteria are eligible for a fees-only award. Applications for Research Council scholarships are made through the University, either through a central process or via the academic department - click on the links for details of each Research Council's scholarships and how to apply.

Other funding bodies

Many charities, foundations and trusts provide funding for postgraduate study, from small grants to full scholarships. Some are for specific subject areas while others have more general eligibility criteria.
