Discover Law

What is Law?

group of law students

Law is the body of rules and regulations that is used to govern a society and to control the behaviour of its members. In our everyday life it affects almost everything we do, whether buying a ticket, downloading something from the internet or talking on our mobile phones.
The law protects our rights from abuse and punishes those who commit crime.
A career in law can be very lucrative. It can be rewarding in other ways too, giving you the chance to help people and contribute to a fair society.

Get a taste of law at University

Discover Law is a two year programme of events created by the University of Sheffield for year 12 students in local schools and colleges. If you are interested in finding out more about studying law at university, Discover Law will give you the chance to experience what it is like.
We will provide lots of opportunities for you to explore the study of law and for you to learn about what university is like from our current law undergraduates. Many of them have come through a similar programme and were in your shoes a few years ago.
As well as being a really interesting and enjoyable subject to study, Law at the University of Sheffield offers first class teaching and facilities.

How often do I need to attend?

You will be away from school or college for no more than two days each term. Some activities, especially visits to other organisations or cities, may take place during your school holidays. We expect you to attend all the events unless there are special circumstances.

How can I get involved?

If you have the potential to achieve good grades at A level or equivalent and would either be in the first generation of your family to go into Higher Education, or you are a Looked after Child or have a declared disability, you may qualify to apply for the programme.

Talk to the head of your sixth form or your course leader to find out. They will tell you if you are eligible based upon the criteria and information we have provided for them.
Make sure you have told your co-ordinator of your interest before the deadline of Friday 18th October 2013
