Discover STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths)
Guiding you to careers in science and engineering
Discover STEM is a programme for Year 12 students studying a combination of maths and science a levels (or
equivalent) with a keen interest in further study at university level.
Application is made via your school / college during the first autumn school term. Successful applicants to the scheme will take part in a programme of practical activity throughout years 12 & 13, working alongside current University of Sheffield Students and academics from our associated departments. In addition, students receive support and guidance in applying to and being successful at university, through a range of study skills workshops and information sessions.
Application Criteria for Discover STEM
As the programme is funded by the University’s Widening Participation fund, made available through OFFA, applicants should meet at least one of the following criteria:
• from an neighbourhood of low progression to university
• be the first generation of family to enter HE (siblings may have attended but neither parent)
• eligible for Free School Meals
• are a Looked after Child
• have a declared disability
and all of the following academic requirements:
• be studying a combination of Maths and Science A-Levels
• have achieved GCSE English (grade C+)
• have achieved GCSE maths and/or science (grade A/B)
• both have the academic potential to succeed in HE
• demonstrate a commitment to study
