Sheffield's Outreach and Access to Medicine Scheme (SOAMS)

The University of Sheffield´s Outreach and Access to Medicine Scheme (SOAMS) makes a career in medicine a possibility for able students from all backgrounds.

A number of years ago the University was awarded additional places on the MBChB degree for students who have the ability to become good doctors, but who would not normally consider Higher Education as an option open to them. These places are reserved for students who successfully complete the SOAMS scheme.

Guiding you to a career in medicine

SOAMS is for Year 9-13 students with an interest in medicine, but who would not normally consider Higher Education as an option for them. The scheme provides support and guidance through a range of exciting activities which aim to raise awareness, aspirations and levels of achievement.

How SOAMS works

SOAMS is split into two phases, Phase 1 (Years 9-11) and Phase 2 (Years 12 and 13). It is only possible for students to apply for a place at the beginning of each phase. Once on the scheme students are expected to attend regular events at the University and they receive additional support and guidance from the SOAMS team.

Guaranteed interview for University

Students who successfully complete SOAMS at Phase 2 are given support towards an application to study Medicine at the University of Sheffield. Part of this support includes a guaranteed interview at the Medical School, subject to participants achieving four AS Levels at BBCC and demonstrating commitment to attending SOAMS activities.

If SOAMS students pass their interview they will be made a conditional offer to study Medicine at the University of Sheffield, and providing they meet this offer students will be admitted onto the course to study for their degree.
