Entry requirements for students from Nigeria

We have been welcoming students from Nigeria for many years and our staff are very familiar with the Nigerian education system and qualifications.

High entrance requirements for our degree programmes at Sheffield reflect the quality of the University.

The following information is for guidance only:

English Language Requirements

All applicants are required to have an internationally recognised English language qualification, such as IELTS or TOEFL iBT. SSCE (WAEC) English C6 or above is usually accepted in place of IELTS or TOEFL, however this is at the discretion of each individual department.

If proof of English Language (IELTS or TOEFL iBT), all applicants are required to have an internationally recognised English language qualification such as IELTS or TOEFL iBT. The minimum score that is accepted for entry is IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 80. Some departments may require a higher score.

English requirements will be clearly outlined in your offer letter. Please ensure that you read your offer letter carefully when you receive it.

For Entry to Undergraduate Programmes e.g. BSc, BA, BEng/ MEng

A variety of qualifications can be considered for direct admission to undergraduate bachelor degree programmes. All applications for undergraduate programmes should be made through UCAS.

A Levels
Applicants with a minimum of 3 A levels will be considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes.

International Baccalaureate
International Baccalaureate diploma holders will be considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes.

Other Qualifications
Applicants with one or more of the qualifications listed below will be considered for direct admission for Year 1 entry in our undergraduate programmes:

Applicants who wish to transfer from an undergraduate (WAEC or NECO) programme in Nigeria will be considered for Year 1 entry with strong SSCE grades and an Upper Class Second average in their undergraduate programme in Nigeria.

NCUK International Foundation Year
The University is a member of the Northern Consortium (NCUK). NCUK offers an International Foundation Year (IFY) in Nigeria at Oxbridge School, Lagos. Students who have completed the IFY programme and have achieved the required academic level will be considered for admission to undergraduate programmes.

Sheffield International College provides undergraduate foundation programmes specifically designed for students seeking entry into the University of Sheffield.

For Entry to Postgraduate Taught Programmes e.g. MA, MSc

Holders of an Upper Second Class (2:1) bachelor degree from a recognised Nigerian university will be considered for direct admission to postgraduate diploma or masters programmes.

For Entry to MBA
Holders of an Upper Second Class (2:1) bachelor degree from a recognised Nigerian university and at least 3 years' relevant post-graduation work experience will be considered for direct admission. Applicants must be at least 25 years old by the time the programme starts.

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2:2) degree and considerable work experience may be considered.

For Entry to Postgraduate Research Programmes e.g. MPhil, PhD, PhD with Integrated Masters

Holders of an Upper Second Class bachelor degree and a good masters degree from a recognised Nigerian university will be considered for direct admission to postgraduate research programmes.
