| When do I have to apply by? | Postgraduate students can apply as soon as they have accepted an academic offer on a course at the University of Sheffield. |
Your room
| Can my parents/friends stay in my room when they visit? | Your friends or family can stay in your room on an occasional basis, but they cannot stay for long as otherwise it would break the residency contract you would have signed. | Do you offer single sex accommodation? | The majority of our accommodation is mixed gender. However, the units within our purpose built complexes and landings within Halls are usually single gender. If you apply for a self-catering contract we’ll ask you if you would prefer mixed – male and female – or single-sex accommodation. We can’t absolutely guarantee that you will be placed in a mixed apartment or flat, but we’ll try to meet your preference wherever possible. |
| Can I stay in my room during the university holiday’s? | This depends on the length of your contract; check that it matches your needs before you sign your contract. |
| Can I stay in the same accommodation as my friend? | You can ask for your application to be considered with a friend. To do this, both of you must be in agreement and state this on your accommodation application. We will try our best to accommodate you together, but cannot guarantee that this will be possible. |
| What security will there be? | University accommodation provides basic security services, 24 hour CCTV monitoring, electronic locks, alarms and swipe or proximity card access in many of our properties. Sheffield is also one of the safest cities in the UK according to government statistics. |
| Can I change my room if I don’t like it? | You are expected to stay in your accommodation for the full contractual period once you have signed a contract. The University has a large stock of accommodation and it may be possible to transfer you to an alternative University property at a later date, subject to availability. |
| Is there a TV in my flat? | It depends on which accommodation you will live in. Check our webpages Accommodation for prospective students |
| Is there a curfew? | No. |
| Do I have internet access? | All rooms in single student residences include a level of internet access. This is included in the rent unless otherwise stated. Check Accommodation for prospective students for more information. |
| What cooking equipment is provided in self catered accommodation? | Cutlery, crockery, and cooking utensils are not provided and students should buy their own once they are in the UK. They are available cheaply in many stores in Sheffield. |
| Is my room cleaned? | There is no room cleaning services in any of our accommodation. But if you share bathrooms and pantries there is a partial cleaning service. Further information: Accommodation: Your essential guide 2010-2011 |
| Do I have to share a room? | No, you will usually have a single study-bedroom. If you choose an en-suite room, you do not have to share a bathroom. |
