BA Architecture students awarded first place in Lunawood Urban Challenge 2021

Congratulations to second year BA Architecture students Oskar Maly, Mikołaj Chmiel and Filip Piasecki who were awarded first place in the Landscape category in the Lunawood Urban Challenge 2021 competition.

Arts Tower Drawing studio

Oskar, Mikołaj and Filip’s winning entry, ‘Meet me at the river’, is a bold design for a social space on the banks of the River Don in the Sheffield neighbourhood of Kelham Island. The area was formerly a centre of industry but has been reinvigorated over the last two decades and was recently awarded the title of Neighbourhood of the Year.

The students’ prize submission explains their thoughts on the area: “Near the bridge, over the river a neglected river bank with a car park next to it caught our attention. Inspired by open social spaces and how they influence the community we thought to redesign this site and use its potential.

“We separated the scheme into two distinct areas – an open air social space exposed to the river and greenery and an enclosed dining space hosting different local food vendors. The main theme we focused on was the relation of industrial typology with the shear architecture that wood offers.”

The Lunawood Urban Challenge competition encourages participants to incorporate sustainable timber into their designs for more attractive and sustainable urban architecture. You can view the full list of winners here of the Lunawood Urban Challenge 2021 or watch the announcement webinar here.
