Profile

I completed an undergraduate degree in Ecology and continued my studies with a PhD in Radiobiology at an internationally-recognised research institute, the Medical Radiological Research Centre, Russia, which researches and performs cancer treatment. My particular area of interest was modelling effects of high-ionizing radiation that could be used in cancer treatment.

Since moving to the UK in 2001, I completed PGCE in Post-Compulsory Education and MA in Learning and Teaching at the University of Portsmouth.

I have wide experience of teaching in both Higher and Further Education sectors and have a particular passion for the widening participation programs and teaching mature learners who have been out of education for a period of time. I am a believer in clarity of pedagogical explanations and making scientific concepts accessible to my students however inherently complex they are. Over the years I received Outstanding Lecturer of the Year and the Best Tutor (HE and Access) awards

Research interests

My PhD concentrated on looking at the response of eukaryotic cells to high-ionizing radiation to arrive at a better understanding of how applications of radiotherapy in treatment of cancer can be improved.

The focus on my education research was exploring the key features of teacher-led explanations in Biology aimed at mature learners who have been out of education for some time. My MA Learning and Teaching thesis received an award for the best dissertation on the course.

Teaching activities

I teach on a variety of DLL Foundation Programme modules including Core Biology,
Organisms and Environment, Foundations of Geography.
