As part of the work package ‘Care In and Out of Place’ (research team Prof Majella Kilkey, Prof Louise Ryan, Dr Magdolna Lorinc and Obert Tawodzera), Louise presented a paper entitled: ‘ ‘Kilburn is not Kilburn any more’: an analysis of ageing in and out of place‘.

The paper analysed the narratives of three groups of ageing migrants who have been less visible in research and policy – Polish, Irish and Caribbean – living in two sites within the UK – London and South Yorkshire. Focusing on these two distinct sites, a global city and a mixed rural/ urban landscape, the paper examined participants’ dynamic relationships to places.  Using an intersectional lens to analyse migrants continued negotiations of place through the ageing process, this research seeks to answer calls for more research on the intersection of ageing and other markers of diverse identities and the embodied and emplaced experiences of ageing migrants. A co-authored version of this paper is currently being prepared for publication.

The lecture was very well attended by staff and students, and generated lively discussion. The photographs show Louise, during her lecture, and the reception afterwards with Prof Maggie O’Neill (head of department), Dr. Kieran Keohane and Prof Arpad Szakolczai (former head of dept).
