This unit aims to enable students at an 'Advanced' level of competence in the language to work autonomously, exploring critically a specialised topic normally related to their main field of study, in order to acquire subject-specific terminology and basic discursive skills in the language, as well as develop sound research skills.

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • perform at Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • locate and interpret specialist information, distinguishing fact from opinion and argument from illustrative detail
  • present findings in speech and writing in the target language, using an appropriate register and, where necessary, subject-specific terminology
  • plan and manage a project involving individual research.

The content of our courses is reviewed annually to make sure it is up-to-date and relevant. Individual modules are occasionally updated or withdrawn. This is in response to discoveries through our world-leading research, funding changes, professional accreditation requirements, student or employer feedback, outcomes of reviews, and variations in staff or student numbers. In the event of any change we'll consult and inform students in good time and take reasonable steps to minimise disruption.
