A bold vision for the future of the profession

Hailing from five continents and leaders in their diverse fields, our Landscape50 speakers were selected to present a wide-ranging and ambitious vision for the future of the profession.

The audience heard presentations touching on issues from the fundamental importance of nature in cities, to the future of human life in an urbanising world. Watch the speeches below.

50 years of Sheffield landscape architecture

Founded by Professor Arnold Weddle in 1967, the department has become one of the leading schools of landscape architecture in the world, renowned for its excellent teaching and world-leading research.

The Landscape50 exhibition celebrates this journey and through the memories of our alumni, explores how we influence social and environmental change and make an impact on people’s everyday lives.

The first landscape architecture department in Great Britain

Department Historian, Dr Jan Woudstra explores our early years and the history of landscape architecture education in his paper The Sheffield Method, first published in Garden History 38/2 (2010).

“Thus, on 1 November 1967 a forty-three-year-old Arnold Weddle commenced as the first professor in Landscape Architecture of the first independent Department of Landscape Architecture in Great Britain."
