Embark on a transformative journey with the UK-South East Asia Vaccine Manufacturing Research Hub (UK-SEA Vax Hub) as we offer six fully funded PhD studentships.

Spearheaded by the University of Sheffield, this flagship initiative, supported by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), is dedicated to addressing engineering challenges in vaccine manufacturing and fortifying the preparedness of South East Asia (SEA) against epidemics and pandemics.

Our mission is clear: to establish a sustainable vaccine manufacturing ecosystem in SEA, ensuring equitable access to quality-assured, timely, and cost-effective vaccines. Led by Prof. Tuck Seng Wong from the University of Sheffield's Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and Prof. Kiat Ruxrungtham from Chulalongkorn University, the UK-SEA Vax Hub unites four UK universities (Sheffield, Cambridge, York, and Kent) and one Thai university (Chulalongkorn). Our collaborative efforts extend to 11 partners in SEA, encompassing vaccine manufacturers, academic institutions, research bodies, and governmental agencies.

Focusing on three pivotal vaccine platforms — mRNA, protein subunit, and viral vector — the hub addresses prevalent infectious diseases in SEA, such as dengue and hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). With expertise spanning molecular design, biomanufacturing, process design and engineering, formulation, vaccine manufacturing supply chain, health economics, and vaccine policies, the hub represents a collective force committed to making a meaningful impact.

The six PhD projects, encompassing both experimental and computational projects, are based at the University of Sheffield, working in close collaboration with our members.

Within your PhD programme, anticipate a holistic experience, featuring not only cutting-edge research but also a diverse array of benefits, for instance, engaging in professional networking opportunities, complemented by targeted training in subject-specific expertise and transferable skills. Your academic journey promises a well-rounded and enriching foundation for your future success.
