An overview of the Commercialisation Journey

The Commercialisation Journey’s four-stage programme includes an extensive package of training, mentoring and investment. Our experienced multidisciplinary team guides innovators at every step.

A founder-led journey

We place innovators at the heart of the process, equipping them with the support, training and investment necessary to allow them to make informed decisions about potential routes to market.

Transparency is a key element of the Commercialisation Journey. From the outset, would-be founders have full visibility of the package of support available and the University's pragmatic expectations with respect to equity and royalties.

Stage one

In the introductory Understand stage, an initial high-level commercial assessment of every new opportunity is performed. This includes a review of the associated intellectual property, as well as some preliminary market discovery to understand the potential value of the idea and its likely applications, markets, customers and competitors.

Stage two

The second stage, Explore, consists of a detailed customer-focused market discovery exercise in which we iterate and evaluate various commercialisation options to arrive at the preferred business model. By the end of this stage, a decision will have been made as to whether to pursue a spinout or a licencing model for the opportunity. Furthermore, the initial target markets will have been identified, the revenue model decided, the intellectual property strategy finalised, and a roadmap for any remaining development agreed.

Stage three

The third Develop stage encompasses all of the preparatory activities associated with founding a spinout business and/or concluding a licence agreement. It is a wide-ranging stage encompassing all the necessary legal, financial, operational, business development and team planning associated with establishing a new commercial venture.

Finally, in Launch the developed plans are put into action. Spinout companies are incorporated and licence agreements are concluded.
