At the Department for Lifelong Learning we have over 40 years' experience in welcoming mature students back into education. We act as the University’s gateway for mature students who don’t currently have the qualifications to allow them to enter Higher Education. By offering a wide range of degrees with a foundation year we support students to develop the study skills, subject knowledge and confidence to succeed at degree level study.
Adult education in Sheffield has a rich history stretching back to the formation of the University of Sheffield. Penny donations given by the city's workers helped create an institution dedicated to the further development of the local area and its communities, and many of the University's first students were working-class Sheffielders attending part-time classes. We still hold this ideal today and we're proud of our distinctive origins as an institution set up by the people of Sheffield for the people of the Sheffield.
We understand what it’s like to be a mature student. We know that you might have work, family and other commitments and we provide the support you need to succeed on your chosen course.
“As a key element of an engaged University, the Department for Lifelong Learning will become a clearly accessible gateway to the University and build flexible pathways into and through the University for mature learners from non-traditional background, particularly those living within Sheffield and its surrounding areas”
We offer a range of full and part-time degree courses in a wide range of subjects from across the arts, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. You’ll study alongside other mature students in a supportive and stimulating environment, and have access to staff with extensive experience in supporting mature students to succeed.
