Reading lists

If you're studying with us and want to get a head start, check out our advance reading lists.

Off

Before you start your studies with us, we wanted to offer an informal list of recommended reading, to help you prepare you with the fundamentals of the BA Education, Culture and Childhood degree.

Much of the reading you will be required to do is available online, through our virtual learning environment. But our recommended textbooks offer an excellent introduction to the field of education and will be useful for a number of modules you’ll be taking. There is no requirement to buy them – the library stocks copies – but if you do want to get hold of a few key texts that we will be using throughout your studies, you can.

Key texts

There are three key textbooks that we recommend you consider purchasing, either new or second hand. They are:

  • Bartlett, S. and Burton, D. (2020) Introduction to Education Studies (5th edition). Sage.
  • Kehily, M. (Ed.) (2015) An Introduction to Childhood Studies (3rd edition). Open University Press.
  • Simon, C. and Downes, G. (Eds) (2020) Sociology for Education Studies: Connecting Theory, Settings and Everyday Experiences. Routledge.

Another good text is:

  • Smith, P., Cowie, H. and Blades, M. (2015) Understanding Children’s Development (6th edition). Wiley and Sons.

This book is one of the key texts for the first year Child Psychology module and is also a useful reference point for the educational psychology modules in the second and third years.
