I could tailor my modules to gain a better understanding of what I wanted to do after university

I moved from Lancaster to study at the University of Sheffield and graduated in 2021 after receiving a First in BA Education, Culture and Childhood.

This course was a natural fit for me. After college I had a two-year gap as I was unsure about what route I wanted to take. I knew I wanted to work with young people having done multiple work placements for youth charities and schools, however I wasn’t ready to commit to a specific teacher training degree.

I then came across the BA ECC and did my research into the possible graduate careers with this degree. I loved the wide-ranging options for educational-based occupations being a post-graduate, and with the broad nature of the course I could tailor my modules to gain a better understanding of what I wanted to do after university.

The course also allowed me to gain valuable work experience in the second year, where I worked for a local anti-trafficking charity. I have always been a big advocate for volunteering and so this placement was a personal highlight for me.

This placement and my other external responsibilities including volunteering for NCS, Trussell Trust and Girl Guiding have been huge talking points in interviews post-grad, and so a piece of advice I would pass on to future students is to get involved in as much as possible! It is a great way to meet new people but also gain valuable transferable skills for future jobs.

My undergraduate degree gave me the opportunity to understand the education system and delve into the social, political and economic matters within it. This knowledge is something I will now take onto my next chapter as I embark on a new journey.

I have recently accepted a job with the Department for Education (DfE) in Manchester as an Executive Officer. The role is within the National Delivery Unit, supporting academy trusts to achieve robust governance and effective safeguarding. I am excited to start work with DfE and being given the opportunity to work towards a Level 3 Certificate in Operational Delivery. It is allowing me to continue my educational journey, working for a ministerial department, whilst earning a salary.

This job feels like a reward for the three years of hard work of working towards my degree, whilst being in the middle of a pandemic!
