Time flew by way too quickly. I will always cherish these beautiful memories.

Tailor-made for someone like me

The Information Systems course has a nice blend of technical and non-technical courses. Furthermore, the Professional Enhancement pathway offered me more flexibility with the electives, in recognition of my professional experience. I was attracted by the the fact that the Information School is well-reputed and ranked Number 1 in the World for Library and Information Management (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023).

The Information Systems course is tailor-made for someone like me who is from a technical (Java Engineer) background and wants to move into Consulting/Project Management in the future.

The course is intense and there is a lot to learn in a year. The biggest challenge for me was doing the research and study necessary for all the coursework. I am more used to writing exams, so doing a well-researched assignment was a challenging but enjoyable learning process as well.

An interdisciplinary subject

My class was very diverse, with students from all over the world. It was a great experience to study, learn and enjoy the course with them.

The Information School is also very diverse in terms of study and research. For example, my course in Information Systems is an interdisciplinary subject that overlaps with different fields like IT Management, Business, etc. As a Java Engineer, I am used to working on the technical side of projects. Now I have a better overall understanding of IT projects ranging from modelling, software development to project management.

My favourite modules were Database Design, Information Systems Modelling, Object Oriented Programming and Business Intelligence.

I attended many social and employability events, which were enjoyable. The summer employability event was quite helpful since I got some useful tips for job search and updating resume & cover letter. My personal tutor was also very helpful and provided me with support when I needed it. The Careers Service provided useful advice for my professional career.

One of the best decisions in your career

As a student ambassador, I got to share my experiences with prospective students. I hope my insights were helpful to prospective students. I got the chance to speak to a big audience which gives me confidence in my public speaking. In this era communicating the right information to people at the right time is very important. I am grateful that I got this opportunity to share my experience as a student ambassador.

I would advise any prospective student to join the Information School without any hesitation. The School is very research-intensive and the lecturers are all very qualified. Furthermore, the lecturers and teaching assistants are very helpful. The full-time Postgraduate courses are completed in just one year, so they are very intense. However, there is support available for students. It will be a good learning experience and definitely one of the best decisions you have made in your career.

Always felt at home

I met many amazing people in the class and became friends with them. From studying together to eating out to night outs we did it all. I have had a great time with them over the last year. Another great highlight was definitely living in Mappin Court, especially with my flatmates. The people in Mappin Court were so nice and we had an amazing year together. Time flew by way too quickly. I will always cherish these beautiful memories.

Sheffield is a beautiful and picturesque city with a lot of greenery. Even though it is a big city in the UK it has a small-town feel as well. I am from Kolkata which is a big, metropolitan city in India, so for me living in Sheffield was a different but enjoyable experience. Sheffield is a very student-friendly city. There are students from all over the world. I have always felt at home here.

Overall, studying at the Information School was a very memorable experience. I got to learn a lot of things academically. I got the opportunity to study with students from all over the world. Coming from Kolkata to study in Sheffield was challenging and daunting initially. However, I am very happy that I was able to learn, study and improve myself as a student and professional.

Graduating with a Master of Science from the University of Sheffield will be very satisfying.
