Sara McConnell joined the School of Journalism, Media and Communication in 2019, after having taught journalism at Kingston University since 2005. Prior to this, she  worked as a business reporter, features editor, news editor and editor on a range of specialist publications, before moving to the Times as business and personal finance correspondent. She has also worked as a freelance journalist for national publications including the Times, the Guardian, the Sunday Telegraph, the Daily Mail, the Evening Standard and Times Online, where she edited the education pages. 

Research interests

Sara’s research interests include the role of journalism and particularly the role of local news; the nature of journalistic culture and the sociology of newsrooms and newsroom organisation; the impact of the shift to digital production on journalists’ idea of themselves and their role. 

Teaching activities

Sara is module leader for MA Ethics (JNL6014) and also MA IPPC dissertation (JNL6300). She is also part of the teaching team for the first year Essential Journalism module JNL120, the third year final project JNL335 and MA Research Methods (JNL6210). She supervises undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations.
