Dutch is an accessible and fun language to learn! In September 2025, Dutch at the University of Sheffield offers a new Online Dutch Course, specially designed for people who want to learn Dutch from the comfort of their own home.
Join an informal community of learners that work together in small groups with a highly experienced university tutor.
Dutch is an accessible Germanic language spoken by 25 million people across the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname and parts of the Caribbean. It is also consistently in the top five of languages most frequently requested by UK employers.
What will I learn?
Our classes are all about using Dutch in real situations, from ordering food and drinks in a restaurant over buying groceries at the market to making small talk.
In this course for beginners we will focus on pronunciation, spelling rules, thematic vocabulary, verb conjugation and basic sentence structures while diving into some cultural features of the Low Countries as well. We also have our own online Dutch grammar channel to help you learn and practise.
With a bit of effort and dedication you will be able to handle a host of frequent social situations at the end of a full course (2x10 weeks).
How is this course structured?
This course is offered by School of Languages, Arts and Societies and its Modern Languages Teaching Centre at the University of Sheffield. It runs over two semesters of ten weeks each.
The 2025 Ab Initio Course starts in the last week of September 2025. Each week you have a 1.5 hour online language session in the early evening. This year’s Ab Initio Dutch Course takes place on Mondays from 6:30-8pm.
How much does it cost?
The price for 20 language classes is £310.
