Japan’s declining population in agricultural regions could be having a damaging impact on biodiversity – a trend that could spread through East Asia and Europe as global fertility rates fall – according to an international study.

Dr Peter Matanle has published a new study in collaboration with Tokyo City and Kindai universities. The study focusses on Japan as a 'Depopulation Vanguard Country' and has discovered that human depopulation may have a negative impact on biodiversity, contrary to common assumptions.
