Alumna Alev Yaraman receives honorary degree
On Thursday 24 July Alev Yaraman joined Materials Science graduands for the 2014 graduation at The Octagon where she received an honorary degree in recognition of her distinguished career in the field of glass research.
Alev Yaraman was born in Antakya, Turkey and graduated in 1971 from the Department, know as Glass Technology then, with a Master of Technical Science Degree in Glass Technology. Her career began with Şişecam as a Research and Development Engineer, she progressed rapidly displaying technical skill and leadership which led to her being appointed as the Research and Development Manager in 1977. She was promoted to be the Vice President of Research and Technology in 1984 and then became the Chief Executive of the Glassware Group in 1991. Alev served as Chief Executive of the Flat Glass Group between 1998 and 2007 and was also the Member of the Management Committee of Şişecam as Executive Vice President throughout the years of 1991 - 2007.
Mrs. Yaraman performed many important duties in international organisations such as the International Commission on Glass (ICG), European Domestic Glass Committee (EDG), International Crystal Federation (ICF) and European Society for Glass Science and Technology (ESG). In ICG she served as a member of the Coordinating Technical Committee between 1984 and 1992, and as the Chairperson of this Committee between 1992 and 1997, and after being served as member of the Steering Committee she was elected as the President of the International Commission on Glass (ICG), and conducted the Presidency between the years of 2003 – 2006.
Alev is a member and holds the title of ‘Fellow’ of the Society of Glass Technology, UK. She is also member of the American Ceramic Society and was a Council Member and Chair of the Glass Division, of the İstanbul Chamber of Commerce (İstanbul Ticaret Odası İTO) for long years. She served in the Boards of various other NGO’s, and at İMSAD(Construction Materials Industrialists Association) in Turkey where she contributed as member of the Board, Vice-President of the Board and then as the Advisor to the Board of Directors.
On receiving her award Ms Alev Yaraman said “I am most grateful to the University for receiving this award and give great thanks to my beloved professors that inspired me not only during my degree but as a professional and am so proud to be a graduate of the Department of Glass Technology.
She added "It was amazing to see not only the number of graduands but the diversity, so many international students celebrating together. I have returned many times to Sheffield, it's wonderful to see the unique changes and recognise the materials science developments incorporated into the city.”
Throughout her career, Mrs. Yaraman has authored/co-authored scientific papers in the major national and international glass periodicals, and has chaired or participated in numerous worldwide glass science and technology conferences. She is the recipient of national and international awards and was the Glass Person of the year, as the 29th recipient of the 1999 Phoenix Award (USA) and to date is the only female to receive the award.
Mrs Yaraman, (pictured centre with The Chancellor Sir Peter Middleton and Professor Mike Hounslow) is now retired but still a member of the Board of Directors at Şişecam.
