The Guardian University Guide has established itself as a key league table for UK universities and features league tables ranking universities on a number of criteria; including student satisfaction scores based on courses, teaching and feedback, as well as the proportion of graduates in employment or further study after graduation.

We are thrilled to be recognised as 5th for Mechanical Engineering in the UK, it’s reflective of the excellent environment here at Sheffield.  As a Department we strive to be the best we can be; to give our students the best teaching, support and overall academic experience possible here in Sheffield.  This Guide focuses on things which students really care about and so we’re excited to be recognised as delivering the best opportunities to our students, opportunities which help them to achieve their personal goals and develop the skills they need to be successful engineers of the future.

Other engineering subjects at the University of Sheffield also ranked well in the guide, and scored within the top 10 places to study for: General engineering - which includes our materials science and engineering and bioengineering courses (5th) and Aerospace engineering (6th), and in the top 20 places to study for the following: Computer science and information systems (11th), civil engineering (11th), Electronic and electrical engineering (which includes our courses in our Department of Automatic Controls and Systems Engineering) (19th)

Professor Jim Litster, VP and Head of Engineering, said: "I'm delighted with such positive results for departments across the Faculty of Engineering in this year's rankings. These outcomes reflect our commitment to excellence in learning and teaching, delivering a world-class education and outstanding student experience, and providing our graduates with the best career prospects possible and engineers ready to solve the grand challenges of today and the future."
