Learning and teaching facilities We're continually investing in creating an innovative working environment with cutting-edge facilities to help you achieve more. You are here Home School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering School Learning and teaching facilities The Diamond Building This striking structure is home to over 6,000 students from the Faculty of Engineering. The Diamond has the capacity to educate top quality engineers that the UK needs to address the skills shortage in the sector, those that will go on to tackle the biggest challenges facing the modern world. Aerospace Simulation and Propulsion Lab This simulation lab offers flight simulators for you to design, test fly, and analyse aircraft performance and you can also learn to fly drones and design your own systems. The Jet Propulsion Lab features a working Turbine Solutions Lab 100 jet engine for performance testing and Rolls Royce Gnome engine for studying construction via borescopes. Thermodynamics Lab This laboratory equips you with the practical understanding and experience involved with the modern engineering concept of energy efficiency. Materials Lab In the Materials Laboratory, you will learn the origins of materials properties, how different materials work and how controlling the structure of a material from the atomic level up can alter its properties. Structures and Mechanics Lab The Structures and Mechanics Laboratory uses hands-on learning to teach you how to design structures and components, from bridges to medical devices. You will explore how these structures behave under load, how to predict failure, and how to optimise performance. Fluids Lab This lab uses state-of-the-art equipment to teach you fluid mechanics principles with applications in designing safe and efficient systems like water pipelines and cooling systems.
