Our department was established in 1917 and has gained a strong international reputation for research and teaching. We’re one of the UK’s leading departments of Mechanical Engineering and ranked amongst the UK's top five for research. Our research vision is to apply our core strengths in mechanical engineering science, addressing key societal challenges, to advance fundamental science and to achieve stakeholder impact.

We truly believe that this expertise should translate into research-led teaching that is an inspiration for future generations. Our learning and teaching vision is to recruit high calibre students, inspire them and provide a challenging curriculum that will ultimately equip them with the skills to compete globally.
