German Year Abroad (MLT302 / MLT304)
This unit aims to enable students to heighten their awareness of cultural and linguistic aspects of the country where they are studying, encouraging their social integration and fostering their independent and/or collaborative study in the foreign language.

Students will complete a diary in which they will record and reflect upon their linguistic and cultural integration progress over a period of at least 10 weeks. They will also contribute to a blog intended to share language learning advice and practical tips about living in the region and country with other students currently abroad or preparing for a year abroad.
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
- interact with native speakers of their target-language country
- understand complex or specialised texts, identifying key facts, ideas and arguments
- reflect upon the language and culture of the target-language-country
- reflect upon and make decisions as to how to improve their language/cultural proficiency
- present findings relating to the above in writing.

Summative assessment:
- MLT302: Year Abroad Diary to be submitted by 3rd January (100%).
- MLT304: Year Abroad Diary to be submitted by 3rd July (100%)
The Diary requires students to record and reflect upon advances they have made in linguistic and cultural awareness and competence.
Feedback: Written individual feedback will be provided in the diary after submission. Students are also encouraged to contact their tutor during the semester for advice.
