Dr Joanna Flavell (she/her)

I am an ecofeminist scholar researching and teaching in environmental politics, with a special interesting in activism in global climate politics. I joined the department in July 2023, having previously held posts at LSE, UCL and the University of Manchester.

I use an ecofeminist lens to understand global environmental change and am particularly interested in the global politics of climate change, climate activism and strategies of resistance in spaces of global environmental governance, such as the UNFCCC. I am currently pursuing two research projects. The first is working to conceptualise a theory of intersectionality that has the capacity to encompass the natural world. The second is exploring the concept of ecofeminist ‘parenting’ seeking to envision truly green feminist society.

My research has been published in a range of journals including Environmental Politics, Hypatia and Global Environmental Politics. My recent book Mainstreaming Gender in Global Climate Governance: Women and Gender Constituency in the UNFCCC is published in the Routledge Gender and Environment Series and has won open access funding. This book explores the role of feminist activists in The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and highlights the progress they have made in mainstreaming gender as a key issue in global climate governance.
