María-José joined the University of Sheffield in 2003 as Spanish lectora and postgraduate student. She started teaching first-year language courses and later became involved in the coordination and delivery of interpreting modules for the (now extinct) BAMLI degree. Since then, María-José has taught Spanish language courses at all levels and she is currently convenor for the First Year post A-level Spanish programme and Final Year oral language programme.

Originally from Spain, María-José was an undergraduate and postgraduate at the Universidad de Zaragoza, where she studied a BA Hons in English Studies and went on to complete the postgraduate programme “Traducción, transculturalidad y lenguajes especializados”. María-José obtained her DEA (Diploma de Estudios Avanzados) with a dissertation on the pragmalinguistic analysis of the language of power in La Casa de Bernarda Alba and its translation into English. While doing her postgraduate studies, she also worked in the English Department where she taught a number of modules ranging from English for Engineers, to Phonetics and History of the English Language.

María-José is interested in second language acquisition, language pedagogy and intercultural communication.
