My current research interests focus on two key areas, how the teaching of academic skills can be integrated successfully into a politics and international relations curriculum and the role of using political scandals and humour in creating effective teaching practices.
I am also interested in the role of state-led interventions in the steel industry in South Yorkshire and the resilience of defence industrial capabilities in an increasingly uncertain global international order.
My past research has focused on the evolution of the G7 and its role in managing international order. I have also focused extensively on the work of the ‘English School’ in International Relations Theory and the work of early thinking within the School and those associated with its development, particularly on the role of international crises in shaping global decision making.

I am currently the Module Convenor for the following courses:
SPR121 Political Analysis 1: An Introduction to Research and Scholarship:
This module is designed to provide L1 students with an introduction to academic research and scholarship and to provide students with the key tools to succeed in Higher Education. The module engages students with a range of case studies on political scandal and failure and asks difficult questions about institutional, governmental, and individual decision-making and failure. It engages students to think about how they understand the reliability of evidence, how to interpret and understand the use of data in policy making, how decision-making affects the lives of individuals and groups, and how a failure of people and institutions to critically reflect, change direction, or be held to account lies at the heart of political scandals both past and present.
SPR301 Political Analysis 3: Independent Research Through a Dissertation:
This module prepares L3 students for their independent dissertation research and aims to build upon the spine of academic and research driven training that students have experienced at both L1 and L2 of their studies. It provides students with the framework to design and deliver their own independent research over several months, developing skills and capabilities for the next step in students careers.
I have also convened and taught on a range of other courses including:
Contemporary Security Challenges
International Relations Theory
Political Analysis
Introduction to Security Studies
US Foreign Policy
Oppression and Resistance
I have been awarded the following Teaching Prizes:
2024 - Political Studies Association (PSA) Sir Bernard Crick Prize for Outstanding Early Career Teaching
