Community Energy and Just Energy Transitions in Ghana

Off

Funded by the University of Sheffield and Global Challenges Research Fund, this project explores the potential of off-grid, community led energy systems to address energy access gaps and to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 7: 'Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all' in Ghana.

The research consists of a mapping of existing initiatives providing renewable energy to communities who lack access to reliable and affordable energy in different locations across the country (in urban, peri-urban, rural and island communities). Looking at the challenges of implementing renewable energy programmes involving communities and different technologies (biogas, wind, solar), the project will provide new insights on the ways in which communities can be active participants in future energy transitions. Partners included Dr Simon Bawakyillenuo, University of Ghana (Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research).
