Structural Engineering MSc student Maria is originally from Mexico. She chose Sheffield because of what the University can offer, and she loves the architecture of the city.

Why did you choose your course?

As a Civil Engineer, my favourite part of my profession is designing structures and developing answers to the different structural difficulties that arise throughout life.

What have you enjoyed most about your course so far?

The level of expertise I've gained in designing earthquake-resistant structures, as well as my knowledge of the subject. In addition, the laboratories I've taken have helped me better comprehend the behaviour of the structures I'm designing.

Why did you choose to study at Sheffield?

I chose to study at Sheffield above all because of the university itself.

What are the best things about studying in your department?

The level of expertise of the professors that support us during our programme.

What do you like most about the City of Sheffield?

I love the architecture of the city and the parks.

Make the most of the experience. Learn the most that you can, do not hesitate in approaching your professors in case of doubts because they will always want to support you during your entire programme.

Have you used any of the careers support services run by the university?

I have used the careers hub and attended some seminars given by them to have advice on the process of my applications for graduate schemes.

Are you in any student societies? What do you enjoy most about these activities?

I have been in the Latin society and Volleyball team. What I enjoy the most is all the great community that is created among their members.

Have you got any plans for after you graduate - either in your career or otherwise?

After graduation I will work for my dream company - Atkins.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

I will be a senior engineer in the bridges design field participating in very interesting and challenging projects all around the world.

International Merit Scholarships

We offer a generous package of financial support for international students including 75 undergraduate scholarships worth £10,000 towards the annual tuition fee and 125 postgraduate taught scholarships worth £5,000 towards the tuition fee. Applications are now open for existing offer holders.
