Studying at the University of Sheffield proved to be one of the best career choices I made

Graduate student Chris Walker.
Chris Walker
Civil Engineer
BEng Civil Engineering
Chris's course covered a broad spectrum of core subjects within civil and structural engineering which accurately reflected career opportunities within the industry.
Why Chris chose civil engineering

What I found great about the course was its structure and how the fundamental principles of civil and structural engineering taught in the first year are built upon in more detail in subsequent years. Lectures are accompanied by tutorial sessions which provide a great opportunity to go through material with fellow students and teaching staff who are always happy to help.

The department also has great laboratories and testing facilities where experiments are carried out to prove theory taught in lectures.

The Integrated Design Project was by far the best part of the course; it provided the opportunity to pull together all of the knowledge and skills gained over the course and apply it to a realistic design scenario where, in groups, you present your work at key milestones to the rest of the year. This is a great test of character and prepares you for the real world.

Whatever aspect of civil and structural engineering you choose to pursue, this course will cover more than you need to know and prepare you for one of the best starts to a rewarding career.
